Who and what your policy protects

Auto liability insurance addresses covered injuries or property damage you cause to others and for which you are legally responsible. Bodily injury liability and property damage liability are separate protections. Your own car repairs generally require a different coverage, such as collision. Your own injury expenses may involve medical payments, personal injury protection, health insurance, or another available coverage, depending on the circumstances.

Read the limits carefully. Some liability policies show separate caps for each injured person, for all bodily injuries in one accident, and for property damage in one accident. Others use a combined limit. A legal minimum is not a guarantee of enough protection for a serious crash. Check who is insured, which vehicles appear, and any driver exclusions. Tell the insurer about household drivers and how the car is used so the policy reflects the actual situation.
