Read the policy in layers
Begin with the declarations page: the summary tailored to your policy. It commonly identifies the named insured, policy period, insured property, selected coverages, limits, deductibles, and premium. Check names, addresses, vehicles, and effective dates for mistakes. The summary is useful, but it does not contain every coverage condition or exclusion.
Next read the coverage agreement, definitions, exclusions, and conditions. Definitions explain terms such as who qualifies as an insured. Exclusions remove specified situations from coverage. Conditions describe duties, including reporting and cooperating with a claim. Endorsements amend the policy and can add, restrict, or otherwise change protection. Read them with the base contract, including at renewal. If a sentence is unclear, ask the insurer or a licensed agent to identify the relevant wording and explain how it applies to a concrete example.
