Match protection to the place you live
Homeowners insurance usually combines protection for the dwelling, other structures, belongings, and certain liability claims. Renters insurance generally covers the tenant’s belongings and liability, rather than insuring the landlord’s building. A landlord’s policy usually does not protect a renter’s possessions. Neither policy promises payment for every loss: covered causes, exclusions, limits, and conditions control.
Both policy types may include additional living expenses when a covered loss makes the home uninhabitable. This generally concerns necessary increases over normal living costs, subject to limits and time rules. Personal liability coverage can respond to covered claims that you injured someone or damaged their property. Medical payments coverage is separate and may pay limited guest injury expenses without determining fault. Read the declarations page for a summary, then check the full policy and endorsements for details.
