Responsibility for harm to others

Personal liability coverage in a homeowners or renters policy can address covered claims that an insured is legally responsible for injuring someone or damaging their property. It may also provide a defense for a covered lawsuit. Report claims and legal papers promptly; a demand alone establishes neither responsibility nor coverage. The facts, definitions, exclusions, and policy conditions all matter.

Medical payments to others is a separate coverage that may pay qualifying medical expenses without requiring a determination that you were at fault. It has its own eligibility rules and limit. Neither coverage is a substitute for your own health insurance, and personal liability does not repair your own damaged belongings. Some personal liability protection can apply away from home, but motor vehicles, business activities, household members, and particular circumstances may be treated differently. Ask how the policy applies to the people and activities in your household.
