Exclusions and changing activities

Personal liability policies contain exclusions. Intentional harm, business activities, and some vehicle or watercraft exposures commonly require special attention, although wording and exceptions vary. A personal umbrella does not automatically cover a business just because it operates at home. Nor does a broad limit promise coverage for every animal, rental arrangement, recreational vehicle, or online statement.

Discuss changes before beginning a new activity when possible. Give the insurer accurate details about household drivers, properties, pools, pets, rentals, paid work, and boats. Ask which underlying coverage applies and whether the umbrella includes the exposure. Some umbrellas include specified personal injury offenses such as libel or slander, but that is not permission to assume all online disputes are insured. Obtain the relevant policy language and any written endorsement. Keep the details coordinated across policies, especially when different insurers provide the underlying coverage and the umbrella.
