Review protection and respond to a claim
Review liability protection when circumstances change and at renewal. Consider the household’s activities, assets, ability to absorb a loss, and existing policy limits. There is no universal limit that fits everyone. Ask a licensed insurance professional to explain available limits and the coordination between policies. Check premiums, exclusions, covered people, required underlying limits, and defense provisions together.
After an incident, prioritize medical or emergency help and report promptly to the relevant insurers according to their requirements. Do not wait for a bill to reach the underlying limit before asking whether the umbrella insurer needs notice. Preserve accurate records and forward demands or lawsuit papers immediately, confirming receipt. Cooperate with the claims process and ask before making a settlement commitment that could affect coverage. If a decision is unclear, request its written policy basis and use the insurer’s review process or your state insurance department’s consumer assistance.
