Catch small leaks early

A recurring wet spot is a reason to investigate, even when the amount of water seems small. Include accessible sink cabinets, toilet connections, appliance hoses, and the area around the water heater in a regular visual check. Look for moisture, staining, rust, cracked hoses, or a musty smell. An unexplained increase in your water bill can also be a clue. You do not need to move heavy appliances or open walls to begin noticing changes.

Arrange prompt repairs through a qualified professional or your landlord. Follow appliance instructions for inspections, hose replacement, and maintenance; a leak sensor can provide an extra warning but does not fix a problem. Run washing machines and dishwashers when someone is home and able to respond. Keep a brief record of observations and repairs so you can recognize a repeated issue. Renters can photograph visible damage safely and report it promptly through the building's maintenance process.
