Plan for shutoffs, cold, and time away

Before an emergency, ask a plumber or building manager to identify the appropriate water shutoff and explain how to use it. Do not force a stuck valve or operate shared building controls without authorization. Ask how any shutoff plan affects fire sprinklers, water-dependent heating, and appliances. A written plan is more useful than guessing during a leak.

Before freezing weather, arrange protection for vulnerable pipes and outdoor plumbing, following local utility and professional guidance. Maintain appropriate indoor heat while away; simply switching the heat off can expose plumbing to freezing. Ask someone to check the property when practical. Follow local instructions about faucet dripping because water restrictions and plumbing systems differ. If you suspect a frozen pipe, contact a plumber and shut off the appropriate supply only if you can safely do so. Never use an open flame to thaw a pipe.
