Start with the first five feet

Wind can carry burning embers ahead of a wildfire. Those embers may ignite leaves, mulch, furniture, or stored items near a home, allowing a small fire to spread to the building. Preparation therefore starts at the structure and the space immediately beside it. IBHS emphasizes maintaining a noncombustible area within five feet of the home and attached decks. Maintain this space regularly; it cannot guarantee a home's survival.

In safe conditions, identify combustible items close to walls and beneath attached decks. Move firewood, leaf piles, combustible furniture, and other fuels to locations consistent with local fire guidance. Replace combustible ground cover near the building with appropriate noncombustible material, such as gravel, where permitted. Keep the area free of new debris. Coordinate shared spaces with the owner or association. These preventive steps belong before an emergency; never delay evacuation or approach an active wildfire to complete yard work.
