A clear perimeter is one part of preparation. Leaves in gutters, debris on roofs, damaged vents, and gaps around building components can create additional vulnerabilities. Look from safe ground and arrange a qualified inspection for areas you cannot safely reach. Ask about appropriate ember-resistant vents and repair options that meet local requirements. Do not block required ventilation or make improvised changes that interfere with how the building works. Roof, ladder, electrical, and major tree work should go to qualified professionals.

Beyond the first five feet, seek local fire-service guidance on vegetation spacing, dead plants, tree branches, and other fuel near the home. Needs vary with slope, vegetation, structures, and property boundaries. Fences and attachments can also connect fuels to a building, so consider them during a review. Work with neighbors, landlords, or an association when responsibilities overlap. Record completed work and plan recurring checks.
